Howie Township Zoning
Howie Township, a rural township south of New Town, has chosen to implement new zoning regulations in order to protect the agricultural resources and to guide recreational development. The Township is within the boundaries of the Fort Berthold Reservation and has it's entire eastern boundary the Van Hook Arm of Lake Sakakawea.
Although most of the shore of Lake Sakakwea is part of the Van Hook Wildlife Management Area (WMA), and not subject to the Township's Zoning Regulations, those area's adjacent to the the WMA have potential for recreational development. The Township does not wish to deter recreational land uses, only to ensure that they are in harmony with the existing farming and ranching land uses.
The Souris Basin Planning Council gave technical assistance to the Township in the development of their Land Use Plan and associatied Zoning Regulations.
